How to be at your best?
We all have so many plans that we want to accomplish.
Whether you’re growing your customer base, building new relationships, hiring a new team member, leading your team or creating new products and services, whatever it is, we have a lot on the go.
So what can support us to be at our best as we put our efforts forward in meeting our priorities, obligations, and purpose?
There could be a number of answers to this from great to sleep to the latest time management strategy.
But in this video today I wanted to share something that could be a real game-changer in your approach.
This is not a one-and-done. It’s a practice that I encourage you to try each day.
And, I demonstrate in my video how I practiced it in the moment for myself :).
Do you ever wonder what goals to set?
Happy New Year!
I hope this email reaches you healthy, happy and ready for what’s coming this year.
I’m hearing from some of you that you are cautiously optimistic but approaching the start of the year slowly.
And I’ve heard from others that you are ready and putting your head down with clear intentions, and you’re moving ahead with your plans, regardless of what else is going on (Omicron be damned!).
Whatever your thoughts are on beginning your year, I want to ask you about goal setting.
Do you set goals?
And if you do…?
Do your goals light a fire within and get you excited to hit the ground running?
If your goals aren’t generating that kind of excitement, I encourage you to take a look and see how you can write or re-articulate your goals so that they do.
Because, if you aren’t excited by the prospect of moving ahead with your goals, then why do them? AND, you lower your chances of hitting them in the first place…
Your end of year business review
As we enter into the festive season and we begin to think about winding down for the year, I wanted to ask you: Do you perform an end of year review?
This is an opportunity to take stock, reflect and take a look at the bigger picture.
It’s been another tumultuous year and depending on where you live, perhaps a return to more things that are ‘normal’ for you.
Whether this is a practice you do each year or if you’re new to it, I wanted to share my process for my business review…
What does working ON your business mean anyway?
I always loved the message from Michael Gerber’s E-Myth that says:
“Once you recognize that the purpose of your life is not to serve your business, but that the primary purpose of your business is to serve your life, you can then go to work ON your business, rather than in it with a full understanding of why it is absolutely necessary for you to do so.”
He makes the point that your business is not your life.
Your business and your life are two separate things.
Your business has its own set of rules, its own purpose apart from yours.
Realizing this concept can support that separation and objective perspective where you fit, in relation business.
Your Business Vision
Being able to articulate your company’s vision simply is powerful.
It supports your decision-making, how you lead, and provides a guidepost for your company to work towards.
Sharing it with your team, your clients and suppliers can be equally as powerful so people know what you’re about. People are attracted to doing business with companies that have passion and purpose.
If you haven’t articulated or written your business’ vision in a while, I encourage you to use this simple framework which includes what success looks like.
Here’s a vision framework for you to work with:
It's the person you're becoming, not the job you do or the business you run
As many locations begin to slowly open up, some faster than others, I don’t know about you but for me there comes a mix of relief and anticipation for the things we’ve missed: connection, hugs, seeing people we care about, traveling, greater sense of stability & security.
And, reservation and cautiousness. For me the reservation comes from, not wanting things to go back to exactly the way it was….I want to incorporate some of the changes and things I’ve come to carve out space for: a greater sense of my own purpose, more frequent consideration of my personal wellbeing, making space as a nuclear family in busy weeks, and more space in my calendar and shifting my relationship with time.
Have you noticed any of these things too?
Amidst the worry, anxiety, and fear of the past 15+ months, the challenges have been great. But, what came from that were new perspectives, new ways of working and being, new ways of relating with each other and much more.
Leading your high-performing Team
There’s a lot of advice out there on leadership and sometimes it can make one feel that we have to have things perfectly figured out to be a good leader.
So, I’m suggesting that if you feel that way too, let’s agree that we can let that idea go completely.
In fact, I believe that’s the beauty (or challenge) of leadership…much of the learning is experiential and you have to live it, learn it, and be willing to try things out. Some will work, some will not. And, some will be painful and messy.
However, I think the intention, effort, and a mindset of continuous improvement can go a long way in expanding your leadership skills and creating a high-performing team.
This is a collection of ideas to inspire you in your leadership to dig in and explore ways to take your leadership to the next level so you can heighten results from your team…
Create YOUR Amazing 2021
Happy New Year!
I hope you were able to enjoy your Holidays and they provided you with what you needed.
As we look to 2021 I feel optimistic and excited for what’s to come.
As I look around to the world I still see turbulence, uncertainty, and many challenges. And I also see beauty, kindness, and innovation - solving and addressing some of those challenges we face.
As I turn inward and think about the impact I want to have and the role I want to play, I think about things like:
The underutilized tool every business owner and leader has access to....
There’s a power and practice we all have access to that I would say is one of the most underutilized tools in our everyday toolbox….and I would venture to say, also in life.
First, here are some questions to consider:
Do you ever feel like your business or work is happening to you - a force unto itself and you’re not really in the driver’s seat?
Have you often wondered about the next step to take or how to navigate tough decisions?
Do you feel regular swirling thoughts of uncertainty and lack of direction or lack of focus when you think about your work or business?
Do you find yourself off course often - realizing that what you were doing all day or all week isn’t getting you closer to your goals or aligned with your vision?
Here’s the thing: I know how it feels to be uncertain about the next steps, to feel like it’s ‘hard’ to figure out what’s next or to wade through the noise and chaos of what comes at us daily.
I have found a simple tool and practice helpful and I wanted to share it with you today.
Making an impact on the world through your business
What kind of impact on the world are you aspiring to make through your business?
Companies who are moving towards their vision and accomplishing big things through their businesses are very thoughtful about WHO they need to communicate to (and with!) in order to get their message to the right people so they can fulfill their mission and purpose.
Having a big vision and achieving that is largely about getting your message to the people who need to hear it.
The question here is: HOW do you get your message to those that need to hear it?
How to focus when it's NOT business as usual - Part 1
This is the first in a set of videos that I’m going to be sharing with you on the topic of How to Focus When It’s NOT Business as Usual.
Over the coming weeks, I’m going to share an idea or strategy per week to support you in staying motivated, productive and as focussed as you can be in your business and work.
I have so much to share with you, yet I want to keep these videos short! (Today’s video is 7:22)
So, never before have we had to deal with so much going on in our lives as we move through this Global Health situation.
I love the phrase that’s going around now on social media, maybe you’ve seen it. It states:
“You are not working from home….you are at home, during a crisis, trying to work” (- Posted on the Psychiatric Rehabilitation Association and Foundation's Facebook page)
Even if you normally run your business from your home office, you know this is different…
Are you in a career rut...?
This idea of reconnection and career came up recently in a video I recorded about identifying a purpose and creating a greater connection to the work you do.
This is a BIG topic.
How to get over the fear of selling - even in an Interview!
In my years of working as a sales professional and teaching sales at a Fortune 500 company, I've seen people held back by their own self-diagnosed assessments that they 'can't sell' or don't know 'how to sell'.
I now coach people who are promoting their small businesses or in career transition and I've seen trends that can make a big impact to your personal sales process (whether selling your skills, product or service).
Do you plan for the 1 thing that can stop you in your tracks!
I've noticed that when we plan to accomplish a goal and create our actions, there's a piece missing that can de-rail so many of us. Setting the goal and determining how we'll get there is only a piece of the puzzle...
Accounting for that 'thing' that has the potential to de-rail us could be an important component of your next goal setting and action planning exercise.....
It all begins with a decision.
A decision so powerful it changes the course of things.
At first, it’s not visible on the surface, to anyone else.
Why do you do what you do?
Something else was calling to me and I just couldn't figure it out.
What is your Purpose?
Have you ever gone from job to job giving it your best shot, finding success, (or in some cases not)...only to discover that what you thought was going to be the perfect work for you, just.....wasn't?
Are you still looking for work that connects with who you are and what you truly want to be doing?
