Unleashing Prosperity: Navigating Growth, Freedom, and Flexibility
One of the reasons I’m so fired up working with business owners and founders is because I want each and every owner to experience the growth and expansion running a business offers - if you want to grow as a person, your business is a great teacher - am I right?
Does your business satisfy BOTH your lifestyle AND financial goals?
When I was in university my degree was a Co-Op program - which meant that I had several work-terms through my degree that allowed me to experience different businesses and industries. It was fantastic. I loved my degree and experiences at that time.
In one particular experience, I had the privilege of working in two businesses that shared admin resources (me) which was a partnership between two individuals - one an interior designer and the other a marketing consultant. It was a fascinating look inside these two diverse industries.
At the time, I noticed two hard-working Business Owners with a passion for their work. It was only years after that experience that I really understood the significance of how they ran their business.
What I learned:
How to grow your business
One of the most frequent questions I get asked is ‘how do I grow my business’?
While businesses each have their own founder/owner strengths and opportunities, there are foundational steps to growing any business.
And, when I’m working with my clients, we look at where they are now and where they want to be. We look at what has worked in the past, what hasn’t and how we can use what’s working to fuel greater growth.
We reverse-engineer from where they want to be to hone in on the specific steps they need to take to get there.
What I’m sharing below is a guide so you can self-identify where you are and what next steps could benefit you in your business…
What’s in it for you?
What does your business give you?
What do you get?
What are you able to do ‘because of’ the company you created?
This is what I’m inviting you to consider today…
Is your best customer putting your business at risk?
What’s not to love about your favourite customer?
Whether it's the fact they’re wonderful people to work with, provide you with much of your business, they pay on time or you simply look forward to your interactions together; whatever the reason, each time you do business with them, it’s a good day :).
And why not? I love it when business is fun and enjoyable.
But could working with your favourite customer put your business at risk…?
Are you waiting for things to ‘slow down’?
Are you waiting for things to ‘slow down’ to focus on your goals?
When I was a Relationship Manager selling Professional Services back in the day, I had a number of prospects tell me to call them back when they weren’t as busy. When I did call back, guess what they had to say? It’s still not a good time, I’m still so busy!
Granted, I also understood for some, this was likely a way of deferring a ‘sales’ conversation, but this response also came from many current clients who were in the middle of project with my company. After leaving that role and years later moving into working with my clients, the same message was popping up - that was, in its essence - I have this goal, but I have too much going on to pursue it.
It’s like saying, I want to start running, but I don’t have time to buy the shoes.
Isn’t this the point of prioritization?
If life or the demands of the business are getting in the way of your most important goals, then are you really prioritizing them?
I’m saying this as much for me as for anyone else who sees themselves here.
I too, have said the words - “I just don’t have time to do that thing that I know is going to help me move forward and has been on my goal list for a while.”
This is what I call…
What your business needs to fuel its growth and value…
Have you ever felt the weight of running your business?
Wouldn’t it be nice not to have everything resting on your shoulders?
Wouldn’t it be nice to feel supported and know that certain things are ‘handled’, and you aren’t solely responsible to make key things happen in your business?
I’m not a car person by any means, but this analogy popped into my mind as I was thinking about how I often hear (and experience) the challenge of feeling like you’re alone in your business.
Do you ever wonder what goals to set?
Happy New Year!
I hope this email reaches you healthy, happy and ready for what’s coming this year.
I’m hearing from some of you that you are cautiously optimistic but approaching the start of the year slowly.
And I’ve heard from others that you are ready and putting your head down with clear intentions, and you’re moving ahead with your plans, regardless of what else is going on (Omicron be damned!).
Whatever your thoughts are on beginning your year, I want to ask you about goal setting.
Do you set goals?
And if you do…?
Do your goals light a fire within and get you excited to hit the ground running?
If your goals aren’t generating that kind of excitement, I encourage you to take a look and see how you can write or re-articulate your goals so that they do.
Because, if you aren’t excited by the prospect of moving ahead with your goals, then why do them? AND, you lower your chances of hitting them in the first place…
Don’t wait until later to do this…
I was speaking recently with someone who had sold not one, but two businesses in the past several years.
I asked her what she found was the more challenging aspects of selling. She said that one of the biggest challenges was getting her processes in order. She didn’t build it with selling it in mind and certainly didn’t think about capturing her processes as they operated.
So, preparing to sell her business the first time was quite onerous because it’s something she had to start from scratch.
It wasn’t until this was in place that her business could be properly evaluated (along with other metrics).
Standard operating procedures are not only valuable when you’re trying to sell your business, they are actually very powerful to…
Your Mission and decision-making
Are you making decisions aligned with your Mission?
First off, do you have a clear sense of your mission now? If you’re a business owner, what is your business’ mission?
If you’re a leader, what is your personal mission for leadership? What are you trying to accomplish in your organization? Is it aligned to your company’s mission?
If you are clear on your mission, then that’s the first step to ensuring that your decision-making is aligned and you move each day to fulfill your mission.
Planning to be away? How to achieve a stress-free vacation from your business and work
If you’ve ever had the thought:
“It’s too much work to take vacation, so I’m not going to bother,” then you need to read this.
How can we prepare to be absent from work or business without it causing too much stress so it negates the positive effects that time away can bring?
It’s about planning ahead and creating processes for the things you regularly do so they are more easily teachable and repeatable by others.
The more planning you do, the less stress going away will be.
To grow & scale to a valuable business, let go
One of the reasons I see businesses plateau in their results is not funding, or lack of ideas, but resistance in letting go. Letting go and letting their employees do what they were hired to do.
And for some, simply hiring someone can be a huge hurdle to cross.
By letting go and increasing the responsibilities of those around you, you create one of the foundational components to growth and scale.
It can be difficult and challenging.
What does it often come down to?
Trust.
Trust in them, trust in your business as an overall entity, and trust in yourself.
It's the person you're becoming, not the job you do or the business you run
As many locations begin to slowly open up, some faster than others, I don’t know about you but for me there comes a mix of relief and anticipation for the things we’ve missed: connection, hugs, seeing people we care about, traveling, greater sense of stability & security.
And, reservation and cautiousness. For me the reservation comes from, not wanting things to go back to exactly the way it was….I want to incorporate some of the changes and things I’ve come to carve out space for: a greater sense of my own purpose, more frequent consideration of my personal wellbeing, making space as a nuclear family in busy weeks, and more space in my calendar and shifting my relationship with time.
Have you noticed any of these things too?
Amidst the worry, anxiety, and fear of the past 15+ months, the challenges have been great. But, what came from that were new perspectives, new ways of working and being, new ways of relating with each other and much more.
The strength of your impact lies in your cash
Is your business satisfying your ‘WHY’?
In order to fulfill your WHY for being in business, the company you created has to be able to make the impact you had intended it to make.
Whether that’s impacting families through therapeutic approaches, providing housing for seniors, providing financial security for families, or helping others build healthy businesses, without your own healthy business, it becomes harder to fulfill that mission.
That’s why I love these markers of business value. It’s not only your own business you’re building, but having a healthy business means that you can change the lives of your clients and customers.
That’s the real and compelling legacy here and a huge reason why I do what I do. One of my big WHYs is to help you to be successful in growing a strong, healthy, and sustainable business that impacts others.
I’m deeply motivated to improve the lives of others through economic growth and supporting businesses that make a difference in our communities so we all thrive.
One of the markers of a healthy business is how cash flows through it. (This is the fifth driver of business value.)
One of the most common pains I hear from business owners is that there’s not enough cash. Or it shows up as their desire to ‘do more marketing’ or '‘increase sales’.
Is your business a cash suck?
Or does it generate cash quite handily?
If cash is rarely on hand in your business when you need it, you may want to consider exploring these areas:
An unconventional strategy to business growth
The unconventional strategy: Create space to think.
This may seem odd to highlight, but stick with me here…
Often, we go and go and go in a business we’re trying to create and build. We feel like there’s never enough time, there are more clients or customers to attract, or new products or services to release in this quest of creating, building, and growing a business. There’s a lot of doing. And a lot of striving.
And that action-taking can be worthwhile.
However, there is another side of the equation to consider….and that side is the opposite of doing.
It’s about taking frequent pauses. Creating space for something else…..
How often are you creating space for thinking, reflecting, planning, and considering?
Create YOUR Amazing 2021
Happy New Year!
I hope you were able to enjoy your Holidays and they provided you with what you needed.
As we look to 2021 I feel optimistic and excited for what’s to come.
As I look around to the world I still see turbulence, uncertainty, and many challenges. And I also see beauty, kindness, and innovation - solving and addressing some of those challenges we face.
As I turn inward and think about the impact I want to have and the role I want to play, I think about things like:
Are you building your business 'with the end in mind'?
Let’s talk about WHY you started your business:
Was it to:
-
Have flexibility and freedom
-
Secure a financial future for your family
-
Make a difference in the lives of others through your products & services
-
Make a greater impact more broadly on the world
-
Do what you love to do
Do any or all of these reasons ring true for you?
Does your business need more clients/customers?
This sometimes feels so elusive - where are they? How do I get more?
If you’ve been in business for a while then you actually have some data to draw on. Instead of looking outward, look inward to your previous experiences.
These experiences can tell you a LOT about how to find more clients/customers like the ones you already have. It can be a great source of information for you.
How one simple idea can lead to more success
This chance encounter was not so 'by chance'. And, it reinforced a concept that I learned early on in my sales career...
Wanting a consistent flow of clients? Try this...
Starting your business – the one that you’ve thought of, explored and now finally launched out into the world, is a huge accomplishment.
What comes next is no easy task.
Finding people to work with: Clients. Customers.
