How to create time and space in your business, especially when you don’t have any

Oh the challenge of trying to ‘get it all done’. There’s so much isn’t there? Sometimes it feels like there’s too much!

And, you’re only one person - you’re the leader, the business owner, responsible for it all. How can one person do it all?

I’m often asked what productivity tips I would recommend for busy business owners. I have several, and often, it depends on the specific circumstances of the person I’m speaking with which ideas or strategies I might share.

There are also underlying elements that may masquerade as ‘productivity’ issues, but lead to deeper reasons why we aren’t moving forward….but that’s not for this post.

Sometimes, what we need are just some good pointers on different ways to work and get inspired, so this is what this post is designed to support you with.

The tip I’d love to share with you here is the idea of Taking Action.

When we’re overwhelmed with all of the things we have to do, there’s often an emotional component that takes us from simply busy (and feeling in control) to feeling ‘overwhelmed’ (and not feeling in control).

That can sometimes come from letting our fears, insecurities, and anxiety run the show. This often comes from feeling uncertain in one particular part of our business. Sometimes this looks like being in a spiral of ‘what'-if’s…’will this work’…’am I making the right decision’, ‘can I…’, ‘I can’t handle…’. This spiral of doubt heightens the fear quotient …and builds a big wall which stands in the way of us moving forward.

So, the antidote to this, is to take specific action.

What I propose is this: Decide that you’ll spend a certain amount of time today (say 30-45 minutes) doing 1 thing that’s weighing heavily on your mind. Focus on completing or making significant headway on this 1 important task. Focussing and making progress in something that’s weighing heavily on us can feel like a huge mental load has lifted.

We often don’t realize or pay attention to the fact that feeling uncertain over one part of our business can create a general unease around all the other things you need to do. Tackling that as soon as you can, can make a big difference to how you approach the rest of your priorities.

And, you’ll start to feel that everything else going on doesn’t seem so big and onerous as maybe it once did.

I know, personally, that if I’m feeling like I’m carrying a lot on my shoulders and I’m feeling really burdened by it, there’s usually an underlying task or action that that I’m putting off or avoiding. And, that’s when I know I just need to tackle it head on to get it done - whether that’s actually doing it, involving others in a decision, doing research then making a decision….etc. what ever ‘getting it done’ looks like, I just need to do it.

So, what are you avoiding in your business that, if you were to take action, would lighten your mental load?
