Knowing what you have to do in your business....but not doing it?
This topic has been coming up lately with my clients....but not only with them, but I was also reminded of this idea in my own habits and discipline. I thought it would be a great one to write about here.
How often do you find yourself knowing what needs to be done in your business or in your career, but you just can't make yourself do it?
Often, there can be an underlying fear associated with the task that is causing some resistance. Is this it? Check-in with yourself honestly if this is the case and ask yourself ‘What do I believe will happen if I do ‘the thing’?’. Journal about it, reflect on it, talk to your coach about it.
But, part of the reality that is often underestimated is the fact that you are developing new habits. You are stretching yourself. You are creating discipline and routine around something new that you don't currently have, hence where the resistance may come in. And, maybe you haven’t quite committed to it….
Fear can arise simply because it is unknown. Resistance can pop up because it’s new. It’s work.
There’s a passage in "The War of Art" by Steven Pressfield that stood out to me:
If you wait until you are 'in the zone' to do this work, you may be waiting a long time. By regularly doing the work, and creating a consistent discipline in ‘doing the work’, the inspiration will come. You will train yourself to 'get in the zone'. It will become routine. To Steven Pressfield's point, this is when you become a professional, you commit full time. Your work becomes your vocation. The professional is full-time - invested into their work.
Are you playing at your business? Are you playing at committing to that project at work? Are you playing at hitting your goals or becoming the type of Leader you believe you can be?
Building discipline is about not only committing to the task but to the cause itself. Believing in the bigger picture.
So, decide, WHEN, will you get the work of your business done? When will you commit to doing what needs doing for your career? WHEN will you commit to the pursuits that feed your larger passion? Plan it and then do it. Don't let the resistance stop you.
Make those calls.
Write regularly.
Make those regular connections.
Get clear on your priorities, focus, and execute.
I’m writing this for me also. I see where I’m not committed. I see where I have gaps in my own discipline. Being aware is so important because then you can decide what to do about it. Commit or not commit. It IS a choice.
Do what you KNOW you need to do.
Don't let yourself talk YOU out of it :)
NOW is YOUR time.
