Craving space in your business? Don't look to time management strategies…
How easy is it for you to find time and space in your calendar to work on the really important things to you?
You know, the things that will advance your business or improve how you work?
Here’s a thought.
What if the act of creating space for meaningful work is just as powerful as the space itself?
If creating space in your business feels like a big lift, I want to invite you to think about how the practice of creating time and space for important initiatives is a fundamental skill a founder and owner can cultivate.
We can all relate to the owner that wears all the hats. Bookkeeping, Sales, Customer Service, Leader, HR, Manager, etc. You may be at this stage right now.
Even when you have team members occupying these roles, the work of an owner and founder is rarely a calendar of open space.
However, the owner and founder that is able to create some white space is the one that goes farther. Their companies seem to advance, evolve and grow further.
Why?
Because they’ve developed the skills of vision, prioritization and saying no or ‘not right now’.
They’ve practiced the skill of looking ahead and connecting with what they want their business to grow into. They’ve got a somewhat clear picture of the type of company they’re building that will support them and their ambition and lifestyle needs.
They’ve practiced the skill of deciding what’s best for the company and identifying important projects that would advance them and their business towards this vision (think hiring support, improving a service, modifying a service delivery process, truly differentiating a product or service, coming up with content ideas to engage future clients, etc.). And, prioritizing time and energy towards these. (This also allows them to practice the art of delegation and training if they have team members).
They’ve practiced the skill of saying yes to their priorities by saying no to other requests being made of them that don’t align with their path right now.
This idea is similar to the person that fails often and cultivates greater resilience than the one that doesn’t take risks, because they practice the skill of getting back up and trying again.
It’s not in the failure, but the act of trying again, using the wisdom learned that creates resilience.
Time management practices only get you so far.
The attributor to creating space and time, and ensuring you have both in your business, is honing the skill of tapping into your vision, practicing prioritization and practicing the art of ‘not right now’.
This will allow you to carve some of the time and space you need.
Even a few hours in a week or every couple of weeks will take you further than nothing at all.

Which one of these skills are you practicing in your business?
NOW is YOUR time,
