The surprising reason your business growth plateaus

Have you been in the situation where, no matter what you do, you can’t seem to break through your revenue ceiling? You might be moving the needle a few percentages, but in general, your topline revenue seems to have stalled?

This is exactly the situation a very talented and accomplished friend was in when she was telling me the story of her business. She went on to say that no matter what she did (reminding me she already worked long hours) that she can’t seem to generate more revenue, year over year. Each year she thinks it will be different, but somehow doesn’t end up making significantly more to consider it meaningful growth.

I was asking her deeper questions about how she operated in her business and who and what brought in the most revenue.

“It’s me bringing in revenue and I’ve changed up my services, but I’m not getting the type of growth I’m looking for.”

After hearing her story, I started to see a couple of reasons why she was experiencing a revenue plateau.

These are the same reasons I notice in other successful businesses when they’re usually on the cusp of growing to the next stage.

I’ll first share a story that seems like a tangent, but there’s a point ;).

Her situation reminded me of a Family canoe trip I once took. It was meant to be a leisurely 12 km paddle down a beautiful river here in Nova Scotia. I was in one canoe with one child and my husband was in another with our other child. We started off great - everyone paddling and enjoying the scenery and wildlife. We saw a cormorant, a sun-bathing turtle and many other water fowl. It was a beautiful Nova Scotia summer day.

Eventually, the kids got tired. Even after rest and snack breaks the kids were done with paddling. We went from two people rowing in each canoe to only one. Our speed slowed waaaay down. Even though they were smaller, having the second paddler really helped with our momentum. When they both called it quits and laid back to the enjoy the ride, our pacing stalled. Our 12k canoe trip took much longer to complete than we thought it would.

Are you seeing a theme?

Getting back to my friend’s company, one area that was significantly stalling her progress was that she was the ONLY one responsible to bring in revenue. She only earned what she personally had time to go and pursue.

So, how could she overcome her challenge to experience the long-term growth she was looking for?

That’s exactly what I’m going to be discussing in my upcoming training on Designing your Growth Engine.
